Book Review: Traveling Light, by Vickie Johnstone

About the author:
Vickie Johnstone is a UK based author and poet. She has also authored a collection of poems titled Kaleidoscope, a collection of haiku and a fantasy series about the adventures of a magical cat named Kiwi.

Thoughts on the cover page:
Bright, a simple design that is appealing. I like the silhouette of the girl with the birds flying above her. It gives a sense of freedom.

My thoughts on the book:
Reviewing poetry is not easy for me, and neither is reading it. I’m a poet, so I can write fairly well, but to understand what another poet has put into their verse, and get the same meaning is something that doesn’t happen always. This book of poetry was something I chanced upon while browsing the free section of Amazon Kindle.

What I enjoy in poetry is a feeling of familiarity. It’s wonderful when you look into the soul of a poem and find yourself there, or that you’ve been there. I found that in one of Vickie’s poems titled “Smile”. The poem felt true because I’ve experienced that. Looking at a stranger and smiling, and feeling that you know that person. I’ve even wondered if the person felt the same as my smile was returned. It’s like they say… Smile, because you don’t know who’s smiling seeing you.

The poem that immediately follows it, titled “Hope” also reverberates. It reminds me of my childhood, the carefree times and the dreams, those dreams which are not as free or just as same now.

It’s always nice to see haiku in a poetry collection. They’re from that haiku collection I mentioned earlier. From the eight she has shared, I like the one about rain the most. The musty smell of earth is something I could imagine from her haiku.

Last but not the least, the poem titled “Nightmares” was another favorite. It has both the whimsical and the logical for me, something that I very rarely see together. I can relate to the opening verse though.

One of the poems I did not like was the Footsteps poem, which felt like prosaic poetry of which I’m not that big a fan.

To me, this collection was exactly what it said it was: a search for something new yet familiar in life’s journey. The poems inspire other poets and I enjoyed reading it.
