About the author:
Karthik Subramaniam is a software engineer who worked for several years in Bangalore before deciding that his career and life interests lay elsewhere. This is his debut novel.
My thoughts on the book:
Though I don’t work in the IT industry, I do understand the nuances of it. I’ve only ever read one other book about the life of a techie, so when this book came by, I wasn’t sure how it would be. A techie reading about a techie’s life in a book isn’t as fun as it sounds. (On second thought, it doesn’t sound much fun. It’s like my life after all, right?)
The story, in first person, is about Karthik, who gets placement in one of the top IT companies in India. His parents are proud of him, boast to their family and friends about the accomplishment and coupled with the marriage of their elder daughter to a wealth NRI doctor, their joy is complete. But life is not always as simple as it seems to be. Karthik finds himself with a rich guy doing the job for just experience, but he likes his job (or thinks he does!). The rich dude is characterized as arrogant, and though he wants to just have sex with a very pretty girl, ends up falling in love with her. Time flies by, and Karthik is in Bangalore. But all is not well with him. The job gets to his head, and on his family side too, tensions erupt. The story follows how he handles it, and grows up with it.
It is a light and fun read. It’s not just a humor genre fiction and has all the blend of emotions that we have in a family drama, but is quite nicely written. The language is nice and simple, the characters have a decent depth to them and the events are believable. I could finish the book in a few hours so it was an engaging read as well. I liked the book overall, but I couldn’t quite understand Karthik’s parents accepting the girl he chose as his wife when they vociferously rejected their daughter’s choice of husband (even if that was patched up later).
The book has a very appealing cover design, I must say! I couldn’t understand it at first, but it definitely had a fun feel to it. If you are traveling, this might make a good companion.
