Book Review: Area 7, by Matthew Reilly

There are certain books that stay in my mind because it is the first time I’ve read that author. So it’s a memory that has not only the story, but the first ideas of how the author writes and what genre he likes, and his characters and plot ideas. When it comes to Matthew Reilly, the book that stays in my mind for that reason is Area 7.

Area 7 is the second thriller in the Shane Schofield series, and sequel to the book Ice Station, which I had reviewed earlier. After the events of Ice Station, we see that Shane “Scarecrow” Schofield, captain in the US Marine Corps has made enemies who want to take him out. So he’s put on assignment where he’s safe, on the team protecting the President of the United States (POTUS). When POTUS visits a remote military base called Area 7, Schofield and his team – Elizabeth “Fox” Gant, Gena “Mother” Newman and Buck “Book II” Riley etc. – and Secret Service Agents like Juliet Janson and Francis X. Cutler accompany him. Once at the base, they come to know that it has been taken over by a Lt. General who they thought to be dead, Charles “Caesar” Russell. Not only has Caesar planted bombs in various cities across the US, he’s made it so that the death of POTUS will detonate them; and given orders for the elite crack team at the base to kill POTUS. The book follows the battle to save POTUS, and with him, the United States. And then there’s a battle to save Kevin. You’ll have to read to know who Kevin is.

This book is one of my favorites because of the plot idea and the lightning pace of the novel. It’s a page turner and one that kept me glued to the story from start till the finish It’s full of action scenes and heroes come when needed. Not just Scarecrow, but smaller characters like Herbert Franklin and Elvis Haynes as well. What slightly doused the thrill is that the events stretch the boundaries of believability. No. Sometimes they even shatter that, especially with Kevin and Area 8. I personally don’t mind that, because fiction does tend to be other worldly at times.

A book that I’d re-read for sure. And one that sits proudly on my shelf.
