Book Review: Inkredia – Luwan of Brida, by Sarang Mahajan

There are few genres that I absolutely love reading. Fantasy fiction is one of them. To create a world, and make the reader feel like they are a part of it as they read, that’s really amazing. This book is one that I have read earlier too, but this is an updated, slightly extended edition. The cover is similar to the first edition, but I still love the first edition cover art more.

This book is the first of a series. Luwan lives at the hillside village of Brida, in the country of Inkredia. The villagers are pestered by the guards of Lord Gruwak, in-charge of guarding the pass through the Malango Mountains that goes to the neighboring country of Sivilik. Luwan, obstinate in character, refuses Gruwak’s tax collector, and makes an enemy in Gruwak who orders him captured. But darker forces are at play, and an enemy more powerful than Gruwak might be awaiting Luwan. He takes his sister Meg and flees Brida, heading initially for Narla, known as just “City”. But his destiny is to go to Tushkrum, to fulfill his father’s last wish. On the journey, he finds allies like Kiliarn and Narjo, as well as mythical creatures that are sent to block his way. Can he realize his destiny?

The narration is magical and engaging, making it easy for me to imagine the scenes. The fantasy world that the author creates is also interesting, filled with excitement and danger. These two aspects are very important for a novel in the fantasy genre, so I feel the author does justice to both. I like the character sketches. Luwan is obstinate for some things, brave while facing the unknown. Meg is mostly pessimistic-realistic but I think that works well in tandem with Luwan’s. But my favorite character is Kiliarn. The ending of the book is a bit abrupt, and makes me unsure what lies ahead in the second book.

I mentioned earlier that I had read the book earlier. The updated edition still retains the charm of the first version, and it is a fantasy fiction that I feel is worth reading. What I don’t like is the long wait for the next part of the series. It has already been years. I hope that this updated version from a new publisher is an indication that the sequel is not too far off.

Poetry and writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.
