Book Review: Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss

I was in the midst of a crime-ficion reading spree, but wanted to break the monotony. I thought a short children’s fiction would be just the change I needed. I’ve heard of Dr. Seuss’ books, but never read them before.

Green Eggs and Ham is around 60 pages at most, and shares through verse, the story of Sam-I-Am and how he persists in trying to get a grumpy grouch to try green eggs and ham. The grouch is obstinate though, and refuses to bend to the attempts. Sam-I-Am is persistent though, and the grouch finally has to give in.

The book is quite fun, and with the images accompanying it, the story helps to teach children the value of perseverance, and also how we cannot know if we like something until we try it. The rhyme is very catchy and fun to read out loud, definitely enjoyable for children to do. For me, it was like a fifteen minute read perhaps, but I think children would love to see the pictures, read it slowly and savor it.

Quite loved this short tale, one that made me smile from first page to last.
