Book Review: Songs of a Broken Heart, by Jaibala Rao

A book of poems that sees a friend make her debut as a published author. It makes me happy to see that because I have been able to see the changes in her writing style from Day 1 and I know this has been a dream for her.

In the collection, she explores the range of emotions. There’s strength and helplessness, hopelessness and hope, pain and belief. At times, they’re letters in verse. And the poignancy is palpable.

I liked most of the poems in the collection, my favourite being the poem titled I Promise for reasons I know the author wouldn’t need me to mention explicitly. Some poems felt more prosaic, and I am not a big fan of those.

Would I say this book is perfect? No. Neither would Jaibala. But it is, I hope, the first of many steps in her publishing journey.

Poetry and writing are to me, a breath of fresh air in a life that is sometimes covered by the smoke of sorrow or self doubt. They also become the sweets I share to celebrate when life offers me a reason to. But most of all, they are to me, my life. For each word I write is a piece of my heart, a thought that just had to find its way into the world.
